In Chinese, the word "nine" sounds like the word 'Jiu" for  "long time" and "fish" sounds like the word "Yu" for  "abundance." The carp is one of the most auspicious fish because of its coin-scales symbolizing prosperity. The fully bloomed lotus flower represents purity of thought and tention. Six gold coins are for heaven luck. The tortoise is for long life and support. Together, it symbolizes a lasting abundant good fortune, wealth and happiness. The Chinese believe that keeping some healthy & happy carps or goldfish in an aquarium is a great way of activating the luck of abundance. You can see aquarium in many Chinese restaurants.
